Nederlands Instituut voor Kunststofkennis B.V. (NIKK)

Profile: NIKK is an SME in The Netherlands established in 2010 and has one staff member. NIKK specialises in engineering and inspection of plastic pipe works, tanks and semi-finished products.

The main experience exists in engineering and inspection of thermoplastic material, FRP and rubber lining in chemical, galvanic and energy industry, as well as civil engineering. Inspection techniques includes destructive and non-destructive measurements by means of mechanical testing, thermo-analytical testing and ultrasonic-testing of welds, couplers and laminates.
The company is based at Chemelot, Geleen (The Netherlands).

Role in Project: NIKK will bring to the project it’s practical and theoretical experience of inspection field operations in the chemical, galvanic and energy industry, as well as civil engineering energy industry (including storage tank inspection), including using ultrasonic testing techniques currently employed for conventional above ground storage tanks. NIKK will lead and input into the field trials.

Benefits to the consortium: NIKK is a service and consulting company operating mainly in Benelux and the neighbouring EC countries. They will bring their site experience to the project and will input into the acceptance of the laboratory validation trials and field trials that will take place on plastic storage tanks.

Reasons for participation: The NIKK business portfolio includes the inspection of plastic tanks and it sees this project as an opportunity to extend its services to include thermoplastic structures as a natural expansion of its current business. The company is also looking to expand geographically from a mainly Netherlands base into the larger European marketplace. Thus NIKK expects that the successful completion of the project will offer several opportunities for the further growth of the company and will enable it to further penetrate the inspection sector at a higher technology level.

Key Personnel: Dr. Boris Gibbesch, Managing Director. He has extensive experience in the field of plastics and inspection by means of NDT and DT and is a renowned expert on the engineering en inspecting of welds and connections of plastics.
